How long can my sample be stored without damaging or degrading my DNA?
Thanks to the stabilizing solution contained in the sample tube, the DNA is able to remain stable for three months. However, Galaxy recommends that the sample is collected the same day it is to be sent back to our offices.
Do I need to keep my sample in the refrigerator or cold?
No, it is not necessary since the tube in which the saliva sample is introduced contains a solution capable of preserving the DNA of the sample in a stable manner for 3 months, without the need for cold storage.
Where is the DNA found in my saliva?
The tissues of the oral cavity of humans are made up of a multitude of epithelial cells that contain DNA in their nucleus. Therefore, among the components of saliva, it is possible to extract our DNA which can later be genotyped.
Can I take a DNA sample other than saliva for testing?
No. At Galaxy we only work with saliva samples for DNA extraction.
Where is my sample analyzed?
Your sample is analyzed in our laboratories located in the European Union.
What is the best time of day to take the sample?
The optimal time for saliva sampling is early in the morning, just after waking up. It is recommended not to eat, drink, brush your teeth, chew gum or smoke during the hour prior to the test.
How long do I have to go without eating or drinking before taking the test?
It is recommended not to have eaten, drank, brushed your teeth, chewed gum or smoked, at least one hour before the test.
The GalaxyDNA Test
Can I buy the reports separately?
No. The Galaxy test includes ancestry, health, pharmacogenetics, sports, nutrition, skin and personality reports, from a single purchase option covering all seven reports and with a single saliva sample.
Why Galaxy and not another test?
Galaxy’s test is able to communicate and explain, in a simple and understandable way, a wide range of useful genetic traits. While other genetic companies focus on developing a report aimed at healthcare professionals or expert geneticists, Galaxy aims to make genetic information accessible to everyone, without the need for a scientific background. In addition, the test is not limited to a single area, such as health or ancestry, but with a single sample you will receive seven reports detailing the results of sport, pharmacogenetics, health, skin, nutrition, ancestry and personality.
Is it necessary to indicate the biological sex to perform the Galaxy test?
No. At Galaxy we have developed a customized algorithm capable of identifying the biological sex and ancestry of the person being tested. Based on this data, Galaxy applies the appropriate algorithms to your ancestry and sex, resulting in your personalized report.
What technology is used for the analysis of my DNA?
Galaxy uses microarrays or DNA chips from Illumina, one of the leading companies in the market. This guarantees the accuracy and quality of our analysis.
Is it considered a diagnostic test?
No, the Galaxy test is preventive and informative. It is important to be aware that diseases are often multifactorial and Galaxy only analyzes a specific part of the entire genome. Therefore, for disease-specific diagnosis, it is necessary to consult your physician to determine the specific test needed.
Should I make any major changes in my habits or lifestyle based on the results of this test?
No. It is important that before making any changes related to your habits or lifestyle, you consult a physician or geneticist.
How much weight does my DNA have on the final outcome in the development of diseases, effectiveness of diets, sports performance, personality, etc.?
Genetics plays a very important role in the development of our personality, predisposition to certain diseases, metabolism and even sports performance or skin characteristics. However, other factors such as environment, habits and lifestyle play an equally important role in our development. Therefore, our health and well-being depend on the combination of both types of factors: genetic and environmental.
Does it really work, and on what evidence is it based?
The technology used by Galaxy for the extraction and analysis of DNA from the saliva sample is one of the most advanced on the market today. In addition, Galaxy’s multidisciplinary team has developed a customized algorithm based on the most relevant and recent scientific publications available.
Is it possible that my results are different from other genetic tests I have taken?
Yes, it is possible. Although individual genetic information is the common denominator to any test, the interpretation of these results can have variability. Genetics is an evolving area of knowledge and studies and discoveries are increasing daily. Therefore, the algorithms used by each of the companies offering this service may vary, using more or less studies in their analysis or being more or less updated. In our case, Galaxy’s expert team of geneticists works exhaustively for the development of an updated, complete and accessible scientific report for all types of people.
If my results indicate that I have an increased risk of developing a disease, should my close relatives also have a genetic test?
Each disease has a variable genetic component, so it is important that, if this is the case, you communicate your results to a physician or geneticist who will advise you in making this decision.
If I have an increased genetic risk of developing a disease, should I share my results with my physician?
If you have any concerns or doubts about your results, Galaxy recommends that you consult a doctor or geneticist. However, it is important to keep in mind that having a genetic predisposition to develop a disease does not necessarily imply its development in the future. Diseases are multifactorial in nature. In other words, genetics is an important factor in the development of diseases, but it is not the only one. The environment, diet, habits and lifestyle are very important components in the care of our health. That is why a consultation with a physician is important, as he/she will be able to complement your genetic report with your medical history and family history, to help you make a decision on how to improve your health and well-being.
How similar are my results and DNA to those of a direct relative?
Our genetic information is inherited from our biological parents, so we share much of it with our relatives. However, in some cases it is impossible to know if we have inherited certain traits without genetic testing. Genetic information is individual and non-transferable. Therefore, in cases in which the presence of a mutation or a specific polymorphism is to be ruled out or found out, Galaxy recommends that a genetic test be performed for that patient, regardless of the results of the family members.
Data Protection
What does raw data mean?
The term “raw data” is used to define the data file obtained after genotyping the DNA sample. This data file consists of a sequence of numbers and letters representing the positions of your DNA sequence that have been evaluated. The results of a person’s genotyping process or raw data are invariable and unique, therefore, once obtained, they can be used by different companies offering this service.
However, it is important to keep in mind that the difference between the services offered by different companies is marked by the interpretation and analysis given to this raw data.
Your raw data file then goes through a unique algorithm developed by the Galaxy team, capable of interpreting and generating the seven reports with the results and the explanation of the implications of those results.
It should be added that the raw data from the different companies are not usually the same, since they do not genotype the whole genome, but only a part of it, and the selected positions do not necessarily coincide. Therefore, the same algorithm applied to different raw data can give a greater or lesser number of analyzed traits.
Can I have my raw data?
Yes, at Galaxy we provide you with your raw data at no additional cost. Just contact us at info@galaxydna.com and we will send it to you.
Is my genetic data confidential?
Of course. At Galaxy, your genetic data is stored anonymously in our database to protect your privacy.
Does Galaxy sell or share my genetic information with hospitals, research centers or genetic databases?
We never sell your data, we only share genetic information with institutions or research centers, completely anonymously and with the informed consent of the client.
If at any time I decide that I do not want you to have my genetic data, can I request that it be removed from Galaxy's databases?
Of course. If you would like Galaxy to remove your genetic information from our databases, simply send an email to info@galaxydna.com and your genetic information will be removed within two weeks. Remember to make sure you have saved your reports, because once your data has been deleted, Galaxy will not be able to send them to you again. And you will only be able to request updates to your reports by starting the process again with a new DNA sample collection.
